In a recent podcast interview, renowned author and entrepreneur Tim Ferriss opened up about his transformative journey with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). He described TMS as “the most durable, noticeable, day-to-day change” in his mental state that he has ever experienced, underscoring how impactful this treatment has been for him. Ferriss’ reflections provide insight into TMS as a viable intervention for a range of mental health conditions.
Ferriss has long been a supporter of mental health research, including work in psychedelic therapies, which he views as tools to fundamentally change how we understand mental health and psychiatric disorders. However, he acknowledges being “tool agnostic,” focusing instead on treatments that provide high leverage outcomes. Within this context, Ferriss recently explored a new iteration of TMS—accelerated TMS (aTMS).
What is Accelerated TMS?
TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technology that has been in use for decades, primarily for depression. In its newer form, accelerated TMS condenses what would typically be weeks of treatment into a much shorter period, sometimes as intense as 50 sessions over five days. This condensed format has been pioneered by experts like Dr. Nolan Williams at Stanford University and referred to as the SAINT protocol.
According to Ferriss, aTMS involves targeted stimulation of specific brain regions using magnetic pulses, administered in clinical settings. He experienced two rounds of treatment: one with a company using an H7 coil helmet and another with a paddle-based device enhanced by computer vision for precise targeting.
A Life-Changing Experience
Ferriss’ journey with aTMS began with a thorough diagnostic process, where he was identified as having moderate to severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, and long-standing bouts of depression. Following his treatment, Ferriss noted a marked reduction in symptoms, to the point where he no longer met diagnostic criteria for any of these conditions. Additionally, his lifelong battle with insomnia vanished, resulting in the best sleep he’s had in decades. “It has been the most durable change in my state,” Ferriss stated, emphasizing the dramatic improvement.
Ferriss also shared how the therapy exhausted him mentally—comparable to “running a mental ultramarathon”—but he stressed that the results were worth it. Despite the fatigue, his overall sense of well-being, clarity, and calmness were well worth the effort, even if it temporarily impacted his productivity.
Proceed with Caution
While optimistic about aTMS’ potential, Ferriss cautions against do-it-yourself (DIY) approaches, likening them to “Darwin Awards territory.” TMS involves manipulating sensitive brain circuitry, which can worsen conditions if not done correctly. He strongly recommends seeking qualified clinical practitioners with real experience, emphasizing the importance of working with established hospitals or clinics rather than unvetted providers.
Ferriss concluded by noting that while accelerated TMS shows tremendous promise, it is not a “silver bullet.” It often requires follow-up “booster” sessions to maintain the effects. However, he remains hopeful that as the technology evolves and more data is collected, it could become more widely accessible, potentially reshaping how we treat complex mental health disorders.
